The Family Band

April 18, 2026 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

$10 – $20

In a lavish room of a fairytale-worthy German castle, August and his five children sat in a semi-circle, each with a viol in hand. Their mother, Sophie, sat in the middle, leading the family consort. Taking Albert Freyse’s painting of August, Sophie and their children making music together as a point of departure, The Family Band imagines a wholesome musical afternoon of 17th-century family fun. Luckily, it’s not too hard to imagine what they might have played together. The Family Band will feature music from Duke August’s spectacular personal music library, including unpublished pieces by Sophie herself and beloved favorites by her musical collaborator, the famous Heinrich Schütz.

Community Sing & Play to immediately follow the concert! Stick around for tea and cookies and join the Lyracle musicians to sing/play through a few short English pieces composed during Ann’s lifetime. All voices, instruments, and levels welcome.
